Diversity Statement

As a scholar specializing in Africana Studies and Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, I am deeply passionate about exploring the intricate intersections of race, gender, and culture. My commitment extends to creating a learning environment that inspires students to delve into these intersections. Recognizing that many students enroll in my classes due to a personal connection or a genuine interest, I aim to foster an environment where those who find articulating their experiences challenging can flourish in confidence and understanding, not only in terms of content but also self-discovery.

I firmly believe that each student deserves to encounter reflections of themselves in the curriculum. To ensure representation, I am proactive in selecting texts, videos, and media crafted by individuals from marginalized groups, including writers and filmmakers of color, LGBTQ+ scholars and activists, and disabled individuals. Encouraging students to bring their complete selves into both the classroom and their work is a consistent emphasis in my teaching approach. I am also aware of the challenges some students face as a result of their lived experiences and I take their needs into consideration, both when developing a teaching plan and when making myself available to students as needed.

My lived experiences as an African American woman contribute a unique perspective to my teaching, research, and service, as does my experience growing up in poverty, proudly identifying as part of the LGBTQ+ community, and being disabled. My 17-year career as a social worker, focused on serving vulnerable populations, significantly broadened my personal and professional outlook. With a decade of public speaking and training/facilitation experience, featuring a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion focus, I have also served as a DEI advisor and consultant for prominent brands such as Sephora, Pinterest, Target, Apple, Procter & Gamble, and A&E Networks. I've conducted DEI workshops for high-level executives from companies like Amazon, Walmart, and Apple. In my writing, I've consistently centered on marginalized communities, exemplified by my two best-selling books that specifically highlight Black queer women.

Throughout my career, I've steadfastly advocated for diversity in every sector, aligning with my firm beliefs. I am committed to championing underrepresented groups in academia and beyond, aiming to empower and uplift students and colleagues from all backgrounds. My dedication centers on contributing to the creation of a more just and equitable society, recognizing education as a powerful tool for achieving this transformative goal.
